The imminent flooding in Louisiana is heartbreaking.
For the moment I'm going to just be a conduit to ongoing coverage via The Dead Pelican - multi-aggregator of all things Louisiana, and also The Hayride, which is all over this.
Check this AP story.
NOLA has a flood map: estimates of flood times once the spillway is opened.
In an agonizing trade-off, Army engineers said they will open a key spillway along the bulging Mississippi River as early as Saturday and inundate thousands of homes and farms in parts of Louisiana's Cajun country to avert a potentially bigger disaster in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.About 25,000 people and 11,000 structures could be in harm's way when the gates on the Morganza spillway are unlocked for the first time in 38 years.
What a lousy choice for Governor Jindal to have to make: flood thousands of rural farms and families, or save Baton Rouge and New Orleans. When the Morganza spillway opens in the next 24 to 36 hours...Sad, sad. No words.
This flood is epic. It's painfully reminiscent of the 1927 flood. Look at these pictures. Epic.
Please don't take your post or the song down. I am so glad someone finally said something about it. My people are from South Louisiana and all this is breaking my heart. I love my state. These people will suffer so much and loose everything. An interesting book about the river is called River Rising and some people feel it is the best book they have ever read. Thanks for what you do. Michele
ReplyDeleteGrowing up in Beaumont, Tx, we flooded out of our homes 2 1/2 times and got crushed by Hurricane Rita. I know exactly how hard this is, and the waiting to begin rebuilding, restarting is almost the hardest. Knowing that it is a sacrificial destruction doesn't make it feel any better but it does mean that there is at least a touch of purpose to their suffering. Prayers. Keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteWe are praying. Will watch here to keep up. God bless Louisiana and hold its people in His hands.
