Depressing Beyond Words...

An editorial in Friday's Wall Street Journal is simply depressing beyond words, yet at least half the country does not care. Here's the first paragraph - click on the link for the rest - whatever side you're on.

"Though we doubt most Americans realize it, this would be one of the most profound political and ideological shifts in U.S. history. Liberals would dominate the entire government in a way they haven't since 1965, or 1933. In other words, the election would mark the restoration of the activist government that fell out of public favor in the 1970s. If the U.S. really is entering a period of unchecked left-wing ascendancy, Americans at least ought to understand what they will be getting, especially with the media cheering it all on."

What I keep hearing from Obama supporters is, "Oh, that's not true! He isn't going to do THAT! That's just fear tactics you Republicans are using! Check his 'Fight the Smears' site!" Well, no. I already have checked the site and I see lies on there (about Acorn) so I don't trust it. Anyway, this editorial isn't just about Obama, it's about the liberal revolution in Congress in general.

i'd assume the last eight years have appeared to be such brutal conservatism that you're getting a hard core knee jerk reaction to the other side- frankly, thank George Bush more than blame Obama or etc.

i get the concerns and i agree some of it is worthy, but i also think the republicans have plenty of the responsibility for this shift on their own shoulders

Trust me, GWB has left lots of conservative values in the dust which is why many of us conservatives are not happy with him and which is how the Congress ended up with a democratic majority. However, at this point, it's not about blame. It's about turning your country over to socialist values which I'm not prepared to do.

well let's see how it goes b/f you freak out too much - i truly believe that the economic crisis will eat up all the time of the next president, regardless of who they are

but do think "socialist values" are going to come into play in this country to some degree - i'm just not as scared of it as you are b/c i think it'll be balanced by our beloved capitalism - again - i think a hybrid of isms will happen and again, i'm just not afraid of it

we'll see - we don't even know Obama is going to win yet - hell, i nearly died when GWB won second term but he did. (we won't get into how he one that first one though :p)

This is exactly why I'm so bothered that Peggy Noonan and people like that will throw McCain/Palin under the bus like they are. Just because you don't like them, doesn't mean the EXTREME opposite of what you believe in is the way to go! I honestly don't get that mentality.

What is it about capitalism that is so horrible? It's the engine that drives the economy. Socialism does nothing to drive an economy. It takes from those who achieve and gives to those who don’t. We already have that that system in place, and it’s called the Welfare State.

It burns me to see dollars I work for being taken from me and given to people who refuse to work. People who can’t work, by all means help them. But what really burns me is a little thing called “Earned Income Credit.” This is a little program where someone who pays virtually no taxes gets a refund for more than what they paid in. So we have socialism in place now. (Not only do these people get a welfare check, they get housing, reduced utility bills (then utility companies will ask customers to donate to help the underprivileged pay bills, that’s how evil capitalism is).

As far as the wait and see… Why would I want to "wait and see" how things are going to be before I start screaming foul? Once the camel gets its nose under the tent, it will be too late.

Yes, Republicans share some of the blame as to what is going on, but I don't see much criticism of the Democrats, who are behind a majority of the problems. Woodrow Wilson (a person from elite society) was a socialist and tried to push socialistic ideas on the country, but a little bump in the road called World War I sort of got in his way. FDR, another socialist and elitist did start his New Deal , which was a multitude of social give away programs rolling, but another bump in the road (WW II) came along. Granted, the New Deal may have been needed because of the Depression, but once the Depression was over and after WWII, when the economy started recovering, the social programs should have been shelved.

JFK, had some social ideas he pushed along, but he also had some very strong economically conservative ideas, like tax breaks to strengthen the economy.

Then came LBJ's "Great Society". Talk about being able to sit on your dead ass and benefit from those who did the harvest. We're still suffering from that "Great Idea".

Carter came along and Hell, I can't even talk about that disaster, I just don't have the time. Thank God Ronald Reagan was there to pull us out.

OK, Bush One, didn't keep up with and fight for conservative ideas and raised taxes, the economy stumbled.

Clinton, was Carter II. Almost the same people who ran Carter ran Clinton. Only Clinton, I think, had enough sense not to go too deeply into the liberal pool. Besides, thank God Americans came to their senses and elected what was a mostly conservative Congress two years after Clinton took office.

But somewhere along the line the Republicans started acting like liberal Democrats, spending money on earmarks (even for their capitalistic buddies ) and social programs, which is what got us into a lot of our financial problems
.
Then came 9-11 (which ignorant people like fat ass Rosie O'Donnell thinks was an inside job). Unfortunately it takes a lot of money and has taken a lot of money to protect this country and fight a war.

So, after being attacked, and unlike Clinton's military philosophy of "We'll get who ever did this" but never took action, Bush decided to take action. Yes it was also Clinton who allowed Sadam Hussein to thumb his nose at the almighty United Nations. I won't even begin to get into how worthless the U.N. is. Talk about corruption that the liberals turned a blind eye to. (And if you want to talk about wasting U.S. Military time, money, personnel, and equipment, look at the Balkans, Croatia, and Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovnia, we’re still there because Monica got a stain on her dress.)

But the Republicans wouldn’t do anything to stop the madness, and started acting like liberal Democrats, so we conservatives had a belly full and said, if Republicans were going to act like Democrats, hell let Democrats take Washington. Well since January of 2007 the Dems have and we have been living in prosperity ever since.

Higher Gas prices. Higher taxes. Corruption that is being ignored, unless it's a Republican (don't get me wrong, a dirty rat needs to be sniffed out and removed regardless of who they are, but lets get all the dirty rats), and the list of complaints go on.. What is sadder still, even after the 2006 election, the stupid Republicans, especially in the Senate, haven’t done anything to stop the bleeding. They are allowing the wound to become deeper and longer.

Now going back to a "hybrid of isms". I'm glad you’re comfortable with it, because I'm not.

It's bad enough to have the restrictions we have now. What's next? "No you can't travel to such and such place to go visit your family, because it doesn't serve the needs of the people."

Oh BTW, that actually happened in one of the isms that was being practiced in the Eastern Block. From 1917 to 1989 (even still in some parts where ‘isms are still being practiced.” Ask those who were stuck in E. Germany who were separated from family who lived in W. Germany.

Yes, it could happen here. I can picture it now, ID cards with a computer chip in it. You’re in a car leaving Kentucky and entering Ohio. There is a sensor on a post that you pass, and everyone in the government knows there and then where you are. Then you are stopped by a Gestapo like police and asked, “Where are you going? Why are you going there? Who are you seeing? What are you going there for.?” It's coming folks, and that's why I'm concerned. But the government will tell you, It's for your own good. (Side note, the Nazis, they were the National Socialist German Workers’ Party). It was a little ism (that happened to be socialistic). The German people in 1933 didn’t think it and Hitler was such a big deal either.

If you want to see how liberalism being fair is so much fun read Kurt Vonnegut's (who was a liberal) "Harrison Bergeron". Maybe it's because I read a lot of Vonnegut's (and studied history) works when I was younger and was told stuff like this would happen, only it would happen at the hands of Evil Conservative. Hell, it's liberals with their "fairness" who are doing it to us.
