Let The Trash Talk Begin!
LSU will play Alabama for the BCS championship on January 9.
My friend Carol over at Political Clown Parade has an extensive summation of the situation and the controversy around the matching. Seems some folks are upset that it's an all SEC deal.
Carol is dubbing this game "Slobberknocker Redux" and I think that's probably apt.
She is a H - U - G - E Alabama fan and, well, you know how I feel about LSU.
We are reprising our bet from last year; originally the bet was a case of Sam Adams, but when LSU beat 'Bama, and I told Carol instead of shipping beer to Shreveport just donate to her favorite charity, Carol ponied up $100 to the Wounded Warrior Project.
So, when the Honey Badger has his way with Big Al and Bama is left wondering what happened to them, Carol will once again fork over $100 to the Wounded Warrior Project! (And if, heaven forbid, LSU loses, I'll do the same.)
Let the trash talk begin!
Update: Grandpa John is into Chick Fights.

LSU, Alabama, Crawfish Cornbread and Books
The FMJRA will be delayed until Sunday; it's all about LSU v. Alabama around here today.
I did make the time to run down to Barnes & Noble today and meet William and Michael Henry, the new writers I've been telling you about. What a nice couple of fellows! The books are great; as I said before, J. Michael Kenny told me about them last summer. Michael Henry was a longtime prosecutor in Natchitoches before he turned to writing. His son, William, joined in and now they co-author these wonderful stories centering around Willie Mitchell Banks and his son Jake. The first book was set in small town Mississippi but the last one was in New Orleans. They all have that wonderful southern flavor as well as some pretty dastardly bad guys. Michael promises me that book five will return to Mississippi and many of the characters we've grown to love will return.

I picked up the fourth book and had it signed before heading home to get ready for the big game.
I've got two batches of Crawfish Cornbread in the old Chambers range right now and then we're heading out to watch the football game with friends.
Of course I have set the DVR to record Newt and Cain tonight. Professor Jacobson has a live blog thing going on over at his place tonight. I'll check in periodically via mobile over there. I'm a geek.
Time to pull the Crawfish Cornbread of out of the oven, pack it up and head out for the game. Geaux Tigers!

Missing Carol
Awwww I sure miss my friend Carol from No Sheeples Here. It's time for the LSU/Bama game! (Graphic courtesy of Carol, last year.)
Carol, you there? (Carol retired from blogging earlier this year.) We occasionally bet on the LSU/Bama game with proceeds going to charity.
What to do? Should I watch LSU (1) v Alabama (2) this Saturday night, or the Herman Cain v. Newt debate?
Thank goodness for the DVR!

FLASH! It Rained in East Texas Today!
I heard LSU got beat today. Not that I got to see it, or anything.
I missed the first half of the game because my mom had a little meltdown right as the game was about to kickoff, and I had to run out to The Glen and calm her down. It's ten miles there and ten back, so it took me a little bit.
I finally settled in to watch the third quarter and had a couple more minor interruptions. I got back in front of the TV with about five minutes left in the third quarter and it started to rain in east Texas.
About 150 miles from here, it started to rain and a storm warning was issued. So guess what? The KSLA weather dude interrupts the game to tell us about the storms in east Texas and Arkansas. MILES and MILES from here. Sunny and warm here. No rain. No storm warning. Nothing. Nada.
No game, either.
He talked and talked and talked and talked. I finally pulled out the laptop and watched the last part of the fourth quarter on the CBS website. Incredible. Now, I'm not begrudging those people in the path of potentially dangerous weather access to news information or bulletins about impending peril nor do I mean to make light of weather danger.
But, seriously, I mean, could they not scroll the warning information for those affected and put a watch box in the corner? Noooo....... of course not. The guy talked all through the fourth quarter.
I'm glad I wasn't on the switchboard at KSLA this afternoon. There's some ticked off Tiger fans around town now.
Oh well. At least the Rangers won last night!

31-17!!! DAT IS ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hell has frozen over! Government Offices in Washington are shut down tomorrow...and the SAINTS WON THE SUPER BOWL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was a nervous wreck up until the last minute and a half and then I figured we had it!
Shortly after the game ended you could hear yelling and horns honking all around; I went outside on the porch and a guy was running down the street in his tennis shoes, his briefs, and nothing else, hands over head, with his friend driving along behind him honking the horn for all to hear. I'm assuming he lost a bet!
The Dead Pelican has gone black and gold and has the siren up. Red Stick Rant is also celebrating with black and gold.
Here is a live cam of Bourbon Street! Here is the corner of Napoleon and St. Charles.
Good times!
Who Dat Gameday!
Game Day!
I've got my baby back ribs ready for the grill along with my venison & pork sausage. We'll also be having baked beans and various other Super Bowl things to eat.
I have football squares but my numbers suck, unless "five" comes in. Figures.
Geaux Saints!

Opening Day!

LSU opens its season today against Appalachian State. The 4pm game was moved to 10 a.m. because of incoming Hurricane Gustav, and will be broadcast on ESPN Classic.
I love LSU football and come from a long tradition of LSU football lovers. My dad never missed it. I did not actually go to an LSU game until I was grown; I think I was about 26 or so, but I'll NEVER, EVER forget the first time I walked into Death Valley. There are almost no words for that first experience. The whole experience was fantastic: the crowds, the smells of the food being prepeared by the tailgaters, the friendly, jovial, intoxicating atmosphere. The band marching through the streets to the stadium was thrilling. The stadium itself reminding me of the Roman Coliseum; inside, the crowds moving like cattle to their seats. But then, coming through the little tunnel from underneath the seats INTO the stadium absolutely took my breath away. That first sighting of the field - a huge expanse of brilliant green grass, the brilliant lights, the band on the field in performance, and the crowds. OMG the crowds. Every single seat was filled and everyone was moving and yelling and wearing purple and gold. For a newbie, a novice, it was quite breath-taking. And I was hooked. So I'm putting out my LSU flag today, maybe making some gumbo, (even though it is 95 degrees today) and getting ready for some football!
